General Language Warning / Opt-Out

Here is a thing you should know about Jane: She is incredibly foul-mouthed. In a series in which most of the major characters curse reflexively, she's still infamous within canon for her language. She is virtually guaranteed to curse a bunch in any conversation, unless it's with, like, a small child. And even then it's not a sure thing!

More importantly, some of the curses of choice in Deadwood are likely to come across as especially offensive or even bigoted outside of the series' context. In particular, Deadwood's characters use the word "cocksucker" near-constantly--basically just as a harsher synonym for "asshole." As far as I'm aware, it's never deployed in an intentionally homophobic context in the series--but, obviously, that connotation's unavoidable in actual, modern usage. And odds of Jane deploying it at some point in any given conversation are maybe 50-50 at best.

Jane's also from a series set in the United States in the late 1800s, and as you might imagine this does not lend itself to any kind of decent vocabulary with respect to racial and ethnic minorities. Fortunately, Jane's probably Deadwood's most enlightened white character on this front, but there's a possibility that if she starts to talk about home she might use seriously offensive terms in passing. (E.g, residents of the Deadwood camp where Jane's canon takes place routinely refer to the Native American tribes in the surrounding countryside as "heathens," and the camp's Chinatown is frequently labeled "Chink's Alley" by the white population.)

Other characters are perfectly welcome to react negatively to any of Jane's language and make IC assumptions based on it. And, if for any reason you'd prefer not to have your characters interact with Jane (or just have any concerns that you'd want to flag in advance of such interactions) in light of the above, just let me know!

But I swear she's a really lovely person besides the mouth, honest.
